The Forgotten Ones
The Mental Institution, Heart, Afghanistan.
The Afghanistan war is spoken about in terms of dead and injured, reconstruction and education, but behind these media stories lie the broken lives of thousands. Psychological wounds are a low priority. It is left to private Afghan philanthropists to pay for institutions that deal with mental scars. Only the best cases are rehabilitated and returned home. The worst cases spend years institutionalized, sometimes chained in solitary confinement. These are the forgotten ones.
